The Philippines’ most popular and most active volcano is Mayon Volcano. It is also the world’s best shaped volcano or the volcano with the most perfect cone. Mayon Volcano is located in the province of Albay, Philippines, 45 minutes away by air travel from Manila.

Mayon Volcano is referred to by locals as Bulkan Magayon or Beautiful Volcano, named after Daragang Magayon or Beautiful Lady, the legendary heroine of a local folklore. Scientists say that the perfect cone of Mount Mayon is created by lava and pyroclastic flows of past eruptions. Mount Mayon is 8,077 feet above sea level. The higher slopes of Mount Mayon are steep, around 35⁰ to 40⁰ and capped by a small crater at the peak. The sides of the mountain are layered with lava and other volcanic debris.

Mount Mayon’s first eruption that was recorded happened in 1616 but its most destructive eruption was recorded on February 1, 1814. The eruption buried the Cagsawa town with only the belfry of the town church left standing. The site of the belfry is now the best place to view Mount Mayon.
